6th ANNUAL BSF SUMMER GALA
Thursday, August 13, 2009
Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek, accompanied by Hennepin County Jail Commander Roberts, presented Mark Anderson, Executive Director of the Barbara Schneider Foundation, with a Sheriff's Award of Merit at the Gala. The award reads, "In recognition of your professional commitment, contribution to colleagues and to the residents of Hennepin County by improving mental health awareness and providing effective response training to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. Your efforts have improved the lives of people with mental illness and helped others better understand the challenges of mental illness so all people can be treated equally, with dignity and respect."
2009 Barbara Schneider Foundation Awards were presented:

- COMMUNITY SERVICE : Rubén Rosario, St. Paul Pioneer Press

In dealing with the mentally ill in jail, officials try a new way

I spent a few drama-filled hours in jail last week... a clearly agitated inmate named "Michael" held a physician hostage in a locked room.
"I'm not going to hurt him. I just need new medication," the hostage taker bellowed to a sweaty-palmed-but-composed jail negotiator on the other side of the locked door. Luckily, this was all theater.
